Trauma-informed psychological support for adults affected by complex and developmental trauma, whether the wounds are recent or reach back to your earliest years. This is a space to be believed, to make sense of what you've lived through, and to begin building something steadier.

"Complex and developmental trauma arises from repeated or prolonged harm, often beginning in childhood and within relationships that were meant to be safe. The impact reaches into adulthood, and having a safe space to make sense of it matters."

Support for complex trauma & Developmental Trauma

When harm is repeated or prolonged, especially within close relationships, the impact can reach into every part of life, affecting identity, confidence, and connection with others. Complex trauma is rarely a single story. It can begin in childhood, build through later relationships, or take root in adulthood through experiences like spiritual abuse, coercive control, or ongoing relational harm. At Refuge Psychology, support is offered with care, confidentiality, and respect for your story. The work is faith-sensitive and shaped by your own worldview and the beliefs that matter to you. Recovery begins with safety and understanding.

Complex trauma develops through repeated or prolonged exposure to harm, often within relationships where trust, dependence, or authority made it difficult to escape or even name what was happening. When this occurs in childhood, while a sense of self and safety is still forming, it is known as developmental trauma. But complex trauma is not only a childhood story. Harm experienced in adulthood, in marriages, families, workplaces, or faith communities, can lead to or contribute to complex trauma, or reawaken earlier wounds that had long been quietly carried. Many people live capable, accomplished lives for years before the weight of what they have survived catches up with them, often at a moment of transition such as becoming a parent, a loss, or a fresh experience of betrayal. What can look like sudden unravelling is usually an accumulation finally asking to be understood.

Healing from complex trauma takes time. Survivors often carry a complicated mix of grief, shame, fear, and confusion, especially when the people who caused harm were also sources of love, care, or faith. High functioning does not mean unaffected, and struggling does not mean broken. Recovery begins with safety, emotional and physical, and the gradual rebuilding of self-worth, trust, and a steadier sense of self. Support from a trauma-informed psychologist can help make sense of what has happened, understand the patterns that developed to survive it, and begin to restore connection with yourself and others.

  • "There are lies that live in the body long after the people who told them are gone. Healing is inviting them into the light, one by one, and watching them become smaller. In their place, a truth that was there before the wounding can grow: you are wanted, you matter, and nothing that was done to you gets to name you".

  • "You learned to survive by watching, adapting, holding everything together. None of that was weakness. It was how you stayed intact in places that gave you no other choice. Healing is not about trying harder or coping better. It is about being met, understood, and slowly discovering that the world can be different from the one you had to survive."

  • "Healing often starts with being able to tell the story, and to have it received with belief and care. Shame tends to lose its grip when what was hidden can finally be spoken. From there, the work is gradual: making sense of what happened, understanding how it shaped you, and rebuilding a steadier sense of who you are."
